Junior Scientist (tenure track) or Senior Scientist in Physical Oceanography

The Department of Ocean Systems (OCS; headed by Prof. Dr. Gert-Jan Reichart) is looking for a highly motivated junior scientist (tenure track) or a senior scientist in observational Physical Oceanography with an extensive track record based on seagoing research and a focus on the deeper parts of the ocean.

Research Focus

Researchers within OCS aim to understand the role of the oceans in regulating global biogeochemical cycles, primary productivity, and climate. A key objective is to investigate the dark, deep sea, which remains largely unexplored and often yields surprises during visits.

Responsibilities

• Participate in seagoing oceanographic research using modern observational techniques such as moored instruments, landers, shipborne CTD, and microstructure profilers.
• Study interactions between physical processes, sea floor topography, and impacts on ocean biology in the deep ocean.
• Collaborate with international partner institutes, including IMAU, Utrecht University, MARUM, and AWI.

The Candidate

Seeking an exploratory observational physical oceanographer with an extensive seagoing research record focusing on the deep ocean. The candidate will use their experience to address questions about sea floor topography and its effects on sedimentology, geochemistry, and biology.

Expectations include acquiring research grants, utilizing the research vessel RV Pelagia, and collaborating within a multidisciplinary environment with chemical oceanographers and benthic ecologists. Cooperation with other departments at Royal NIOZ is also expected. Fluency in English is required.

Conditions

This position is employed by NWO (The Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). The tenure-track position is for 5 years, with the possibility of a permanent senior scientist role upon successful evaluation. Criteria include a strong publication record, proven funding skills, and an international network.
